Anxiety Healing

A phobia is an intense, irrational fear of a specific object, situation, or activity that poses little or no actual danger. Unlike normal fears, phobias are persistent and often lead to avoidance behaviors that can interfere with daily life. People with phobias often go to great lengths to avoid the thing they fear, even if it’s not a realistic threat. When confronted with the source of their fear, they may experience extreme anxiety, panic attacks, or physical symptoms like sweating, rapid heartbeat, or nausea.

Treating Phobias

CBT treats phobia through recognizing the faulty thought patterns associated with the fear and then practicing encountering the object or situation and recognizing that it is not dangerous. This exposure is done gradually in phases so that the person feels safe.

Healing Phobias

Many individuals recognize the fear is irrational, practice exposure, and still experience high levels of fear. This indicates that a deeper healing process is required, a process that must examine the underlying cause. Individuals with phobias often were raised in unsafe environments, and they developed a hypervigilance to their surroundings. Or perhaps there was a specific event that was difficult to process. The phobia is an externalized fear of a much more fundamental anxiety – “I am not safe”. Once the difficult past events are processed, an individual may feel more safe in their body and mind. Trauma work helps individuals learn techniques to regulate their nervous system and manage emotional and physical responses. Practices like grounding, mindfulness, breathwork, and body awareness help calm the body’s reaction to fear and reduce anxiety when facing phobic triggers.
